Egyptian hieroglyphic inscriptions were mainly applied to monuments intended for eternity, such as tombs and shrines. Probably this small stone slab is a sculptor's exercise in carving hieroglyphic characters in high relief. This is at least indicated by the raised edge that frames the characters. The sculptor cut away the stone surrounding the hieroglyphs, causing the signs to rise, as it were, from the background.
